JUAN DIEGO VILLALOBOS MARTINEZ (Vibraphonist/Percussionist)
Venezuelan percussionist, Jazz and academic, symphony orchestra percussionist, afro-venezuelan and latin. Born in maracaibo, Zulia state, Venezuela on October 23th of 1994. Enters to the program of Youth Orchestras of Venezuela better known as “El Sistema” on October of 2008 and he has since developed an extensive career in academic music as part of one of the four major orchestras in Venezuela as the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela ( OSJTCV ) from 2011 to 2016. Enters the orchestra through a contest in which auditioned with 16 percussionists of which were selected just 2. Since joining the Teresa he has had the opportunity of touring around many countries such as:
NEW YORK 2014 (ONU Anniversary): He becomes the Sting’s drummer playing his big Hit entitled "Englishman in New York". Given the importance of this event he was selected to form a group of 15 musicians among the 700 that belongs to the four best orchestras in Venezuela. It is part of the International Youth Orchestra as principal percussionist at the concert entitled “Lang Lang & Friends” alongside great figures like Lang Lang, Sting, and the Speakers H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, Alec Baldwin and Mr. Maher Nasser. This concert was held at the UN headquarters in New York on October 2014.
EUROPEAN TOUR 2012: Switzerland (Liechtenstein), Germany (Hamburg), France (Toulouse) and Norway (Stavanger).
SALZBURG-INGOLSTAD 2013: on this tour he participated in one of the most renowned festivals of academic music as it is the “Salzburger Festpiele 2013”
on the city of Salzburg, Austria. Here he played at the theater “GROSSES FESTSPIELHAUS” the “Marathon Concert” which realize every year on this festival. Then, they had a concert on the small town of Ingolstad, Germany.
EUROPE 2014: Sweden (Stockholm) at the “Konserthuset”, theater in which the Nobel Prize gala is held every year, Portugal (Lisbon), Germany (Munich) at the “Gasteig München”, France (Toulouse), England (London) at the “Southbank”, one of the most prestigious theaters on Europe, and Turkey (Istanbul).
Milan 2015: Italy (Milan) at the huge theater “Alla Scala” (The Milan Scala).
ASIA 2015: China (Beijing) at the “Beijing National Theater”, China (Shanghai) at the “Shanghai Symphony Hall”, Japan (Soma) and Japan (Tokio) at the “Tokio Opera City”.
He began his musical studies in 1997 at the age of 3 at El Cuartillo E’ La Arepita Artistic Production Workshop.
Year 2002: on Barcelona, Anzoátegui state, at the Don Ángel Móttola School of Music studies Musical Language and Cuatro.
Year 2008: enters to the Puerto la Cruz school belonging to El Sistema where began studying and playing percussion at the Anzoátegui Symphony Orchestra. That same year, in Caracas, starts to study drums for about 3 years at WORLD MUSIC and ALLEGRO Centers of Music. Bout of them are YAMAHA Pensum.
Year 2009: began his studies of Music Theory at the Simon Bolivar Conservatory, and also, his Orchestal Percusion studies with the Prof. Juan Carlos Silva and continues his Drums studies with Andres Briceño.
Year 2012: starts his studies of Latin percussion with Cuban percussionist
Patricio “El Chino” Díaz.
Year 2013: Studied Jazz applied to the Vibraphone with the great Vibraphone player Alfredo Naranjo. Began Harmony Classes with bassist and professor Rotnesth Medina.
Year 2014: online master class about harmony, composition and improvisation “Chick Corea Music Workshop” with the North American Jazz legend Chick Corea.
Year 2015: began advanced studies with the Austrian / Venezuelan pianist and composer Gerry Weil about Academic Piano, Piano applied to Jazz, Arrangements, Counterpoint, Harmony and Composition.
CONCERTS & FESTIVALS:
He has participated in numerous festivals as soloist and / or teacher:
International Percussion Festival of Los Llanos (Portuguesa, Venezuela. 2010, 2011 and 2013). International Folklore Festival Gustavo Vaqueras Contreras (Zacatecas, Mexico), International Folklore Festival (Calera, Puebla, Mexico), World Festival of Arts (Teziutlán, Mexico), all in 2009. National Percussion Festival of Maracaibo (Zulia, Venezuela. 2012). International Jazz Festival Naguanagua (Carabobo, Venezuela. 2016). International Jazz Festival Mérida (Mérida, Venezuela. 2016). Salzburger Festspiele (Salzburg, Austria. 2013).
Makes a national tour on 2014 next to the Freddy Adrian New Quintet playing in the best theaters of Barquisimeto, Caracas, Maracay, Yaracuy and Mérida. He has played several times at the Rios Reina Hall of the Teresa Carreño Theater, Cultural Center Hall of BOD and Simon Bolivar room of the Center for Social Action through Music. All these in Caracas.
He also gave a master class of Afro Venezuelan music applied to Jazz at the National University of Costa Rica in 2014.
He has shared the stage with world-renowned international artists, such as:
Plácido Domingo, Gustavo Dudamel, Jorge Glem, Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Alfredo Naranjo, Diego Matheuz, Christian Vásquez, Francisco Pacheco, Pablo Gil, Sting, Dave Samuels, Juan Alamo, Tom Toyama, Joshua Dos Santos, Miguel Siso, Calle 13, Andrés Briceño, Alexis Cárdenas, DJ Switch, Sung Kwak, Huáscar Barradas, César Orozco, Rebecca Miller, Lang Lang, Eugene Kohn, Nikolaj Znaider, among others.
Works on his first album called “Perspectiva” (Perspective) which includes his first video clip “Influencias” (Influences) and in which have recorded many known Venezuelan artists and musicians as Gerry Weil, Francisco Pacheco, Gerald “Chipi” Chacón, Jorge Glem, Huguette Contramaestre, Carmela Ramírez, Gabriel Chakarji, Freddy Adrián, like others.
